Despite being titled a collective, it was only last year that Habibi brought on board a wider group of collaborators, both to further diversify the voices that were part of the curatorial team and to bring in those with skillsets and experience outside of Tapponi’s own. Expanding Habibi Collective beyond just Tapponi was a natural next step, she explains, with most of the new members being among her close friends, and their expertise covering everything from marketing and securing grants to graphic design. I think the idea of the collective can be romanticized, and I know that there are collectives that exist where there is a lot of drama, but we’ve never had that because we came into it as friends and we recognize each other’s boundaries, she says. We don’t come at it expecting things beyond what we know the other people are capable of or have time for. It’s a tiny team, but we’re very efficient.
